The commander’s words weighed heavily on his mind as he lay on the bed in the small barracks room they’d given him. It didn’t have much, but the bed wasn’t too uncomfortable and the walls weren’t that anxiety causing shade of blue in the first room. He could come and go. Lifting up, he sauntered out of the building, soldiers passing him here and there.

Twilight was approaching and he weighed whether he should get grub at the mess hall or continue. He was given a sandwich earlier and his stomach wasn’t grumbling, so he continued towards base housing. He still had so many questions that rose to the front of his mind while he walked the streets at a healthy pace. First on his mind was what was an antibody? He should know the answer but he didn’t. Did it mean he was immune? If his body responded by making something then he wasn’t immune but had a natural defense against the disease. Yeah, that was it. His good old blood cells hard at work. Arriving at the first set of apartment buildings he marched forward in his civilian clothes.

An older woman sat to the side of a building on a bench and two small children scampered across a playground. A couple older children played hopscotch in the setting sun down a couple blocks. All he saw were older adults and young children. Teenagers and young adults were absent, probably in training to be part of the “new” military.

He thought of the commander’s proposal. It stuck in his mind and attached itself like superglue. His mission started as purely surviving, then grew into something more after hooking up with Maddie, Bryce, and their families. Protecting the group became paramount. Now he was seriously thinking about assisting in the salvation of all living people in the world. A global catastrophic event that out did any volcano, hurricane, or even tsunami.

He wished there was some way to contact Bryce. Where was he? Jack decided in order to finish the mission he and Bryce set out to do, he first needed a walkie-talkie and answers to his questions. All the soldiers had radios. It might not be that much of a challenge to contact Bryce he realized as he stared at a radio left on the bathroom counter.

It was a community bathroom so he grabbed it searching for the soldier to whom the radio belonged. Not seeing anyone, he pushed the radio into his pants and scurried back to his room. When he reached the door he thought twice as they may have cameras about and decided to take another stroll outside.

Rounding the barracks he almost bumped into a captain but excused himself, saluted, and was dismissed. One hundred feet or so from the barracks was a patch of trees. He’d use them for cover. Pushing through the bushes surrounding the trees, he crouched and turned the dial of the radio to the frequency he and Bryce used. “Bryce,” he spoke into it.

No response.
